Royal Mansour Marrakech

Marrakech, Morocco

Royal Mansour Marrakech is a palace of 53 private riads inside the walls of the imperial city, a short walk from Jemaa El Fna. Rooms and suites are replaced by riads of three floors, linked by lanes and discreet underground galleries.

The estate covers five hectares at the foot of the ramparts, with the Atlas Mountains in view. The hotel is built as a medina within a medina: winding alleys, secret doors and patios take the place of corridors. Le Jardin, a little over two and a half hectares, was designed by the Spanish landscape architect Luis Vallejo, with an organic vegetable garden for the kitchens, a bio-aromatic garden for infusions, and an artist's studio in a glass greenhouse.

Every riad is different, with its own zelliges, fabrics, carved plaster and custom furniture, a patio, a private pool and a roof terrace facing the mountains. The 15 Superior riads measure 140 square metres and the 19 Premier riads 175. The 14 Privilege riads run to 430 square metres, with two bedrooms, lounges, a bar and a butler. The Prestige riad covers 850 square metres, with a private hammam, three bedrooms, a library and a bar. The Grand Riad is 1,800 square metres.

Four restaurants serve the estate. Hélène Darroze devised the menu at La Grande Brasserie, La Grande Table Marocaine takes on traditional Moroccan cooking, Sesamo comes from the Alajmo brothers and Italian cooking, and Le Jardin serves Asian and Mediterranean dishes under pergolas.

The spa spreads over three floors and 2,500 square metres, behind iron walls laced in Moorish patterns. The main pool in the garden is 30 metres long and 20 wide, and seven private pavilions of 45 to 80 square metres stand beside it. Le Jardin de Lila is a club for children aged four to ten, and the artist's studio runs workshops in painting, pottery and embroidery.

It suits guests who want a house to themselves inside a palace, with staff who are rarely seen, and families who would use the larger riads and the children's club.
